You know something the whole call needs to hear. The decision is being made right now. And the person leading is talking so fast that every gap closes before you can use it.

THE SITUATION

It is Thursday morning, and eight people are on a Teams call. Priya, the project lead, is closing the plan: “So we are agreed, the launch is on the 12th, Marcus briefs the client tomorrow, great, next item.” You know the 12th is a problem, because the client’s sign-off panel meets that morning. You get your words out:

“Um, sorry, sorry, can I just say something? I don’t know if it’s important, but maybe the 12th could be a problem, I think. Sorry, I’m not sure...”

Count the softeners and fillers: um, sorry (three times), just, I don’t know if, maybe, could, I think, I’m not sure. That is ten in 28 words. Priya replies:

“Sorry, you’re breaking up a bit. Anyway - next item.” - Priya, Thursday morning

And that is the end of it. On Friday, Marcus briefs the client with the 12th. The client’s reply is polite and short: that is the morning of their board meeting.

THE CHALLENGE

Rewrite your break-in so that it:

1. Catches the speaker’s attention with a name, not with “sorry”

2. Puts the problem in the first sentence, before any background

3. Gives one reason, not three

4. Ends with a question, so the floor comes back to the group

Picture the call → Six people, one shared screen, a topic everyone has opinions about.

You’ve got a point.

You rehearse it while someone else finishes theirs, and by the time it’s ready the conversation has moved on two topics.

So you say nothing.

Afterwards you think: “I knew that. I had the English for that.”

You probably did. What you didn’t have was a way in!

This is week one of the Under Pressure sprint, and the situation is the high-stakes meeting. The idea to keep is that in a fast meeting, silence doesn’t arrive. People overlap, talk across each other, and pick the floor back up before the last speaker has finished the sentence. If you wait for a polite pause, you’ll be waiting for the end of the meeting.

What works instead is a signal.

A short phrase, said early and clearly, that tells the room you’re about to speak:
“Sorry to jump in”, or “Can I add something quickly?” It doesn’t make you rude. It makes you audible, and it tells the person talking where to stop.

• That’s the first job, getting in.

• The second is keeping the floor once you’ve got it.

• The third is disagreeing without the room cooling by ten degrees.

All three depend more on timing and tone than on vocabulary, which is good news if your vocabulary is already fine.

You spot a real problem at work, you do the responsible thing and tell your manager, and nothing happens. Not because your manager doesn’t care. Because the way you said it made the problem sound small.

THE SITUATION

It is Thursday afternoon. You have heard that an important supplier is going to deliver late, and the launch depends on it. You message your manager on Teams:

“Hi Dan, sorry to bother you, I just wanted to maybe mention that the supplier might possibly be a bit late with the delivery, but I’m not really sure, so it could be fine. Sorry!”

Count the softeners: sorry (twice), just, maybe, might, possibly, a bit, not really sure, could. That is nine in 35 words. Your manager replies:

“Thanks for the heads-up!” - Your manager, Thursday afternoon

And that is the end of it. On Friday morning the delivery is two days late and the client is on the phone.

THE CHALLENGE

Rewrite your message so that it:

1. States what you know as a fact, not a possibility

2. Names the one thing you don’t know, instead of a cloud of maybes

3. Tells your manager what you recommend they do next

4. Ends clearly, with no apology and no trailing “...if that’s OK”

Here we are, the last week of the month. Look back at where you started. You’ve swapped stiff for natural, you’ve made yourself clearer, and last week you made your points land.

This week we finish the job: saying it like you actually mean it.

Because a lot of us do all that good work and then quietly undo it at the last moment. A strong point comes out as “I just think maybe we could possibly look at this, if that’s OK?”

The idea was good but the delivery apologised for it before anyone could react.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company, and there’s usually a decent reason for it. When you’re speaking a second language, you’re already carrying a bit of extra load, so hedging feels like the safer bet. Softening feels polite, too, and nobody wants to come across as pushy or arrogant, least of all in a room full of native speakers. So we pad the point, just in case.

The trouble is what it costs you…

A good idea wrapped in “just”, “maybe”, and “I’m not sure, but” is easy to miss, easy to talk over, and easy to hand to whoever says it next with a little more certainty. You end up sounding less capable than you are, which is the exact opposite of what all those careful words were trying to do.

Softening itself isn’t the enemy…

Back in week one we added warmth on purpose, and please, thank you, and would are exactly what keep you polite. There’s a difference, though, between polite and unsure.

• Polite is warm and deliberate.

• Unsure is a pile of hedges stacked in front of a good idea until nobody can see it.

Here’s the reassuring bit: this is a delivery habit, not a gap in your English.

Your English is already up to it. You just need to stop getting in your own way. You can be warm and certain at the same time, and that’s the whole move this week.

For a single day, just notice your hedges. Don’t fix them yet, only count them. Most people are surprised how many “justs” and “maybes” slip out in one morning.

You have a good idea. You have thought about it, your English is clear, and you say it in the team meeting. Nobody reacts. Someone says “Thanks, noted” and the conversation moves on.

“Sorry, this might be a silly idea, but maybe we could possibly think about perhaps making the client report a bit shorter?”

Silence. Your manager says, “Thanks, noted,” and moves on to the next item. Ten minutes later, a colleague says:

“What our clients need is a shorter report. Not more data - a clearer answer.” - Colleague, ten minutes later

Heads nod. Your manager writes it down and says, “Good point. Let’s do that.”

THE CHALLENGE

Rewrite your opening sentence so that it:

1. Starts with the point, not with an apology

2. Puts the stress on the one word you want people to remember

3. Shows what the point is not, so that what it is stands out

4. Uses a cleft sentence to point the room at the key idea

Two weeks in, and you’ve done the hardest part of sounding like yourself:

• Week One → you swapped the textbook phrases for natural ones,

• Week Two → you worked on being clear and easy to follow.

This week is the step most courses never get to. Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: you can say something perfectly correctly and watch it land with a soft thud. No reaction, no follow-up, and the conversation just carries on without you.

You’ll know the feeling. You make a good point in a meeting, and nothing happens. Then, ten minutes later, someone says almost exactly the same thing, and the room is suddenly nodding along. Same idea, completely different reception.

It’s enough to make you wonder what on earth is wrong with your English.

Here’s the reassuring part: usually, nothing is wrong!

The words were right, and the grammar was right.

What was missing had nothing to do with vocabulary → It was the shaping, the way the point was framed and delivered, and that, unlike some natural gift, is a skill you can learn.

Being correct and being compelling are two different things.

• Correct is the floor, not the ceiling. It gets you understood.

• Compelling gets you remembered, agreed with, and acted on.

For a lot of us, that gap is the last thing standing between good English and English that really works for us at work.

The good news is it doesn’t take bigger words. It takes better aim: knowing which part of your sentence to push, and how to frame it so the important bit stands out. Small changes, a real difference in how people respond.

Here’s one to try...

In your next meeting, don’t only listen to what the confident people say. Listen to how they say it. Find the person who gets heard, and see if you can catch what they’re doing that you’re not. Half the skill is spotting it!

Your task this week

Take one flat, correct sentence you’d normally say, and rebuild it.

For example, turn “The deadline is important” into “What matters most here is the deadline.” Say the new version out loud, and use it once for real this week.

“Sorry, I’m still not catching that. Could you say it one more time?” - Client, on a video call, third request

THE CHALLENGE

Your reply needs to:

• Stay calm instead of speeding up or getting louder

• Make the one key word impossible to miss (fifteen, not fifty)

• Give the listener a second route to the same meaning, without apologising three times

• Check that it landed, in a way that sounds confident

Read this and understand…

You do not need to lose your accent. You just need to be understood.

Those are two completely different goals, and most people chase the wrong one.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of learners decide that their accent is the problem. If only it sounded more British, more American, more like the voice on the course recording, then everything would click. So they pour their energy into copying sounds they will probably never make perfectly, and they still get asked to repeat themselves.

Here is the part nobody tells you…

The accent is almost never the real issue!

Think of the people you admire who speak English with a strong accent from somewhere else, and are completely clear anyway. Their secret is not that they hid the accent. It is that they put the stress in the right place, and they let the important sounds land.

That is a skill, not a talent, and it is what this week is about.

Why “just lose the accent” is bad advice

An accent tells people where you are from. It is part of you, and there is nothing to fix. Chasing a native accent is a slow, frustrating project with no clear finish line, and it usually makes people more nervous, not more clear.

What actually stops a listener from understanding you is much smaller and much more fixable. Usually it is one of three things: the stress lands on the wrong part of a word, every word gets the same weight so nothing stands out, or a key sound at the end of a word disappears. Fix those, and a strong accent stops being a barrier. Ignore them, and even a light accent can be hard work to follow.

So the goal for this week is not to sound like someone else. It is to make yourself easy to follow while still sounding like you.

Stress is where the meaning lives

English does not treat every syllable equally, and this trips up careful speakers more than almost anything else.

Take a word like present.

• Say PRE-sent, with the stress at the front, and it is a gift or a moment in time.

• Say pre-SENT, with the stress at the end, and it is a verb, to show or introduce something.

Same letters, different word, and the only thing that changed was where you pushed.

A listener who hears the stress in the wrong place has to stop and work out what you meant, and that half-second of confusion is exactly what makes English feel tiring to follow.

The same thing happens across a whole sentence. Read this line out loud, pushing hard on the word in capitals each time:

• “I didn’t send that email.” (Someone else did.)

• “I didn’t send that email.” (I sent something, but not that.)

• “I didn’t send that email.” (I wrote it, maybe, but it never went.)

One sentence, three different meanings, and not a single word changed. That is the power you are leaving on the table when you say everything flat and even.

Stress is not decoration. It is how English shows the listener what matters.

Try this…

Pick one long word you use often at work, something like deVELopment, reSPONsible, or opporTUnity. Say it slowly and notice which part you push hardest. If you are not sure, look it up, because the stressed syllable is marked in every dictionary. Then use it in one real sentence today with the stress in the right place.

It is Wednesday. The deck is not quite on track - you are a day behind because the numbers came in late from finance - but it will absolutely be ready by Friday morning. You open a reply.

THE CHALLENGE

Your reply needs to:

• Tell the truth about where things stand, without sounding like you are making excuses

• Reassure your colleague the deadline is still safe

• Sound like you, not like an automated status update

Yes, your English can be perfect and still sound wrong!

Not wrong like a mistake.

Every word is in the right place, the grammar is clean, and yet nobody actually talks like that. You end up sounding like a textbook rather than a person, and the people in the room can hear the difference even if they could not name it.

This is the start of a new month and a new focus. For the next four weeks, English Language Lab is about one thing: sounding like yourself.

You have spent a long time learning to be accurate. The task now is to be natural, so that your English sounds like a real human being who happens to be you, rather than a grammar exercise read out loud.

This week is the first move, and it is a small one with a surprisingly large effect.

The problem with “perfect”

By the time you reach this level, you have done the hard work. You can build full sentences, you avoid the obvious errors, and you choose your words with care. None of that is wasted, and none of it is going anywhere.

But careful and natural are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where fluent speakers give themselves away.

Real speech is slightly untidy. People pause, they change direction in the middle of a thought, and they drop in small words that carry almost no meaning on their own. That untidiness is not a flaw. It is the sound of a person thinking while they speak. Strip all of it out, and you do not come across as more advanced. You come across as a recording.

So this week asks you to let go of a rule you have probably been following for years: the belief that clean and correct is the finish line. It is not. Being understood, and sounding unmistakably like you, is the finish line. Correctness is only how you get there.

Discard your filler words?

You have almost certainly been told to cut words like well, I mean, you know, actually, and sort of. Stop saying um. Be direct. Be concise.

It is worth ignoring that advice, at least most of it!

Those small words are not lazy, and they are not mistakes waiting to be corrected. They do real work. They buy you a second to think, which stops you from freezing. They soften a difficult message, which stops you from sounding blunt. They quietly signal that you have not finished your turn, which stops the other person from cutting across you. Remove every one of them, deliver each sentence complete and clean with no hesitation at all, and you will not sound polished. You will sound like a machine, or like someone reading a prepared statement.

Fluent speakers lean on these words constantly. They simply do not notice, because it is normal and it is invisible. The skill is not to delete them. It is to reach for the right one, at the right moment, on purpose, so that the hesitation works for you instead of against you.

Three swaps to try today

Here is the difference in practice. Same meaning, completely different effect.

1. When you disagree. The textbook version is “I do not agree.” Accurate, but hard, and a little cold. The natural version is “Hmm, I’m not sure I agree, to be honest.” Identical message, far easier to receive.

2. When you ask for something. The textbook version is “Send me the report.” It reads as an instruction, almost an order. The natural version is “Could you send me the report when you get a chance?” Now it is a request between two colleagues rather than a demand.

3. When you raise a problem. The textbook version is “Your plan is wrong.” The natural version is “I see what you mean, but I think there might be a problem with the timing.” You have made exactly the same point, and nobody in the room has stopped listening to you.

Notice the pattern running through all three. The natural versions are longer, not shorter. They lean on small softening words. And they sound like a person weighing something up, rather than a rulebook delivering a verdict.

There is no need to wait. You can put this into practice today.

The next time you speak English, keep one filler word in on purpose. Do not tidy it away. Say “well…” before you answer a tricky question, and pay attention to what happens: it hands you a second to think, and the conversation carries on exactly as normal. That single habit is the whole idea of this month in miniature.

That is the what and the why, and it is yours to use straight away.

You’re two minutes from the end of a one-to-one. Your manager glances at the clock and says, “Before we wrap up - what are you focusing on this quarter?” You know the honest answer: everything. The client renewal, the onboarding backlog, the report nobody’s read since March, the new hire who needs shadowing. So you start listing all of it, and you watch their eyes glaze over halfway through sentence two.

This is the last week of the reset sprint. Monday’s post was about naming three real priorities out loud, not thirty. Wednesday’s episode was about laying the groundwork with a little-and-often habit. Today’s Fix is where those two ideas meet a live moment: the second your manager actually asks you to say your priorities out loud.

The Situation

“Before we wrap up - what are you focusing on this quarter? I want to make sure we’re aligned before I talk to the director.”

The Challenge

Your answer needs to:

● Answer with exactly three priorities, not a full task list

● Put them in a clear order, most important first

● Use future language that sounds decided, not hopeful

● Stop talking once you’ve said the three - don’t keep adding “and also...”

A few starter phrases, before the framework sharpens them:

● “My main focus this quarter is...”

● “The priority right now is...”

● “I’m going to...”

● “After that, I’ll be...”

The Framework: RANK

Reduce - Get to exactly three priorities before you speak - not five, not one. If you can’t cut your list to three, you haven’t finished thinking yet.

Anchor - Lead with the most important one first: “My main focus is...” Whatever you say first is what they’ll remember.

Name - List the other two in order, with simple sequencing words: “Then...”, “After that...” No need to justify each one.

Keep it future - Say it in going to / will / present continuous, not vague hopes like “I’d like to” or “hopefully”. Decided language sounds like a plan, not a wish.
