Have you ever watched a building go up?

For weeks, nothing seems to happen. Diggers move earth around. Concrete is poured into holes. Workers in hard hats stand around looking at plans.

From the outside, it looks like nothing is being built. But underneath the surface, the most important work is happening. The foundations. The pipes. The structure that everything else will stand on.

What does it mean?

To lay the groundwork means to do the necessary preparation for something bigger that will happen later.

The “groundwork” is everything that needs to be in place before the real work can begin. Research, planning, relationship-building, learning new skills. The things that don’t look impressive on their own but make success possible.

It’s the work nobody sees, but everybody benefits from.

Picture this

Imagine a gardener in early spring. The soil is cold. Nothing is growing yet. But the gardener is outside every day. Digging. Planting seeds. Preparing the soil.

A neighbour walks past and says: “Your garden is empty. Nothing’s happening.”

But the gardener knows better. Everything is happening. It’s all underground. And in a few weeks, the garden will be full of life.

That’s what laying the groundwork feels like. The results come later. The work starts now.

Six big “what would you do?” questions.

Real debate.

And a lot of useful English along the way.

In our monthly group conversation class, we don’t do small talk. This month we sat with six famous thought experiments, the kind that have no right answer, and argued about them in English.

Here’s the idea behind some of them...

• Imagine a machine that gives you a perfectly happy life forever, but you have to leave the real world behind. Would you plug in?

• Imagine a magic ring that makes you invisible, with no consequences ever. Would you still behave well?

• Imagine a teleporter that destroys your body and builds a perfect copy of you on Mars. Is that copy still you?

You can’t answer questions like these with one word. You have to explain, disagree politely, change your mind out loud, and reach for vocabulary you don’t use every day. That’s exactly why they’re so good for speaking practice.

A little grammar, the natural way

The whole class runs on one structure, and most people use it without even noticing: the second conditional.

We use it for imaginary situations. The form is:

If + past simple, ... would + verb.

If I had more time, I would learn to cook.

If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.

The situation isn’t real, but we’re talking about now or the future, not the past. That’s the part to remember.

There’s also a more elegant version with the verb to be. In careful English we often say were for every subject, not was:

If I were you, I wouldn’t do it.

If he were here, we could go together.

This is called the subjunctive. You don’t have to use it, but it makes your English sound more polished, the way a confident, educated speaker sounds.

Some useful expressions that came up

When you talk about imaginary choices, certain phrases do a lot of work. Three good ones from this month:

• to plug in — to connect yourself to a machine. “Would you plug in forever?”

• to leave (something) behind — to go away from something and not take it with you. “You leave the real world behind.”

• to be worth it — to be good enough to be worth the cost. “Is permanent happiness worth it if it isn’t real?”

Try making one sentence with each. That’s how expressions actually stick: you use them in something you mean.

That’s a small taste. In the room, six dilemmas turned into a fast, funny, sometimes surprisingly deep conversation, and a lot more useful English than fits in a free post.

You have three projects on the go. A Friday deadline you cannot move. And approximately zero spare hours between now and the end of the week.

Your manager has just walked over to your desk.

“I need you to take on something urgent.”

The instinct for most people is to say yes -- especially in a second language, where saying no feels even harder than it already does. But saying yes to everything is not a strategy. It is how you end up doing everything badly.

There is a better response. One that is neither a flat refusal nor a silent surrender.

The Situation

You are managing three active projects and a Friday deadline on a client report that cannot move. Your manager, James, has just stopped by and asked you to prepare a presentation for a client meeting on Thursday. It will take at least two full days of focused work.

You cannot do it without either delivering the Friday report late, or doing both at a quality that is not good enough. You need to have this conversation with James today -- calmly, professionally, and with a clear outcome.

The Challenge

Write what you would say to James (3-5 sentences). Your words should:

• Acknowledge the request without refusing it outright -- show you take it seriously

• Make your current workload visible -- factually, not as a complaint

• Offer a decision back to James -- not a problem, a choice

• “I want to make sure this gets done properly, so let me be transparent about where I am...”

• “I’ve got [X] due [date] and [Y] due [date] -- both have external deadlines I can’t move.”

• “I can absolutely take this on, but something will need to shift.”

Think back to January. You had goals. You had plans. You had energy.

Now it’s June. Six months have gone by. Some of those plans worked out. Some didn’t. And some you forgot about completely.

Most people never stop to look at where they are. They keep moving forward without checking whether they’re still heading in the right direction.

But the best professionals do something different. They pause. They look around. They assess.

In English, we have a simple expression for this: “to take stock.”

What does it mean?

To take stock means to stop and carefully assess your current situation. You look at what you have, what you’ve achieved, what’s working, and what isn’t, before deciding what to do next.

The expression comes from the world of shops and warehouses. “Stock” is the goods a shop has on its shelves. “Taking stock” originally meant counting everything in the shop to see exactly what you had.

Today, we use it in a much broader sense. It means taking an honest look at where you are before you plan your next move.

Picture this

Imagine a shopkeeper standing in the middle of their shop after closing time. The customers have gone. The shop is quiet.

They walk along the shelves with a clipboard. What’s selling well? What’s collecting dust? What needs to be reordered? What should be removed?

Now imagine doing the same thing with your year so far. Walking along the shelves of the last six months. Which projects went well? Which skills improved? Which goals have you forgotten about? Which habits are collecting dust?

That’s what taking stock looks like. A quiet, honest review before you decide what goes on the shelves for the second half of the year.

Imagine you are in a job interview. The interviewer leans forward and asks: “Can you give me an example of a time you made a real difference at work?”

You know you have. You can feel it. But the words do not come easily. You start talking about what you did every day, what you were responsible for, the meetings you attended. And somewhere in there, the real story gets lost.

Sound familiar?

There is a difference between doing good work and being able to talk about it. Most professionals, whether English is their first language or their fourth, have never been taught how to describe their achievements clearly and confidently.

They list their duties. They explain their responsibilities. But they never quite get to the part that actually matters to the other person: what you achieved, and why it matters.

So How Do You Fix This?

There is a book that answers this question directly. It is called Speaking About Professional Accomplishments: Guide and Workbook, written by Rachel Boyce. Rachel is an experienced ESL teacher and Business English coach with more than 20 years of experience, and she has built this book around one simple but powerful idea:

There is a big difference between listing your tasks and describing your accomplishments.

Most people never learn this difference. This book teaches it.

What the Book Teaches

The book is built around a framework called STAR. It stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. You may have heard of it. But knowing the name and actually using it well are two very different things.

Here is what the STAR method looks like in practice:

• Situation: You set the scene. “We had lost three major clients in one quarter.”

• Task: You explain what you needed to do. “I was asked to rebuild trust with those clients.”

• Action: You describe what you actually did. “I arranged individual meetings and created a new follow-up process.”

• Result: You share what happened. “Two of the three clients renewed their contracts within two months.”

That is it. Four steps. And suddenly, instead of a list of duties, you have a story that proves your value.

The book also teaches you how to put numbers on your work, even if you do not work in sales or finance. And it shows you how to build a set of professional stories that you can use in interviews, performance reviews, and everyday conversations at work.

Why I Am Recommending This to You

The language in the book is clear and accessible. It was written with non-native English speakers in mind, but the skills inside are ones that everyone struggles with.

At around 9 euros, it is affordable. At 100 pages, it is short enough to actually finish.

But more importantly, it gives you something practical. Not fluency in 30 days, not a magic formula. A real, usable skill that will make you sound more confident and more professional the next time someone asks: “So, what have you achieved here?”

This morning, the brief changed again.

It is not that your manager is trying to make your life difficult. They are busy, they think out loud, and the project is still taking shape in their head. But you are the one who has to rebuild it every time. And right now, you are about to start draft four without any confidence that it will be the last one.

There is a conversation you need to have. Not a complaint -- a professional one. One that gets you a final, agreed brief before you write another word.

The Situation

You are a project coordinator working on a campaign proposal for your manager, David. You have revised it three times in two weeks. Each revision came after David added new requirements or shifted the direction once you had already completed the work.

The fourth draft is due on Friday. Before you start writing, you need to sit down with David, confirm exactly what the final version should include, and -- crucially -- lock it down so it does not change again.

The Challenge

Write what you would say to David at the start of your meeting (3-5 sentences). Your words should:

• Summarise your current understanding of the brief -- show you have been paying attention

• Ask one clear question -- to confirm the gaps or changes

• Propose a way to lock it down -- so this version is the final one

• “Before I start the next draft, can we take five minutes to confirm the brief?”

• “My understanding is that we’re now focusing on...”

When I first moved to Italy, twenty years ago, I marched up to a ticket counter and said, “Voglio un biglietto per Roma.” The clerk gave me a look that I now recognise as “she’s not from round here, is she?”

My grammar was fine. My request made perfect sense. But I’d swept into the conversation with all the social grace of a labrador.

What I should have said was “Vorrei un biglietto, per favore.” Same ticket. Same destination. Entirely different impression.

Why this matters more than it should

Travel is one of the most underrated ways we have of bouncing back. When you’ve been running on empty for months, when work has been a slow grind, when you just need to clear your head, a change of scenery does something nothing else can manage.

People who travel well don’t just see more places. They recharge better, handle pressure better and recover faster from the bits of life that knock them down.

But here’s the catch…

To actually switch off when you arrive somewhere, you need to feel reasonably competent in the place you’ve gone to. If every tiny interaction is a small battle, you’re not on holiday. You’re just stressed in a more scenic postcode.

British English plays one particular trick that catches almost every visitor off guard.

• Get it right, and the country feels welcoming.

• Get it wrong, and people are perfectly polite but quietly file you under “tourist.”

Same trip, completely different experience.

The detour rule

A direct question in English looks like this:

“Where is the station?”

It’s grammatically perfect. It’s also, to British ears, a tiny bit blunt. The kind of thing you’d say if you were in a real hurry, or perhaps in a film about a spy with twenty seconds left to defuse a bomb.

A British person trying to find a platform, order a coffee or locate the loo would be far more likely to say:

This is the mid-year slump. And the solution is not to work harder. The solution is the opposite.

This week’s expression is one that every busy professional needs to learn: “to recharge your batteries.”

What does it mean?

To recharge your batteries means to rest and recover your energy so that you can perform at your best again.

It comes from the idea of a battery that has been used until it’s flat. You can’t keep using it. You have to plug it in, let it charge, and then it works like new.

People work the same way. You can’t keep going at full speed forever. At some point, you need to stop, rest, and recharge.

Picture this

Look at your phone right now. What percentage is the battery on?

If it’s at 5%, you know exactly what to do. You plug it in. You don’t try to make calls on 5%. You don’t blame the phone for being slow. You charge it.

Now think about yourself. If your personal battery is at 5%, what do you do? Most people try to keep going. They push through. They tell themselves they’ll rest later.

But you wouldn’t do that with your phone. So why do it with yourself?

The meeting ended ten minutes ago. People filed out with purpose -- tapping notes into their phones, heading straight to their desks, already busy.

You are still sitting there.

Not because you weren’t paying attention. You were. But the slides moved fast, there were acronyms you didn’t catch, two people talked over each other at the key moment, and now you are not entirely sure what your first task actually is.

You need to ask someone. But the thought of walking up to your manager and saying “I didn’t understand the meeting” feels like admitting something you shouldn’t have to admit.

So what do you do?

The Situation

Your department head, Sarah, has just finished a briefing about a new client project. It was busy and fast-paced. The timeline, the deliverables, and the responsibilities were all covered quickly. At the end, she asked if anyone had questions. Everyone said no. You said no too.

Now you are back at your desk. You have her email open. And you realise you are not certain whether the first deliverable is due at the end of this week or the end of next week. Getting it wrong would mean either rushing unnecessarily or missing the actual deadline.

You need to go back to Sarah and ask. Without making it worse than it is.

The Challenge

Write what you would say to Sarah (3-5 sentences) when you approach her. Your words should:

• Sound purposeful, not apologetic -- you are being thorough, not confessing

• Show what you understood -- so she knows you were not completely lost

• Ask one specific, narrow question -- not “can you explain everything again”

• End with a confirmation -- so you both leave clear

Phrases you’ll need for this one:

• “Do you have two minutes?”

• “I want to make sure I’m clear on one thing before I start...”

• “I followed most of it, but I want to confirm...”

• “So just to check -- is it X or Y?”

Picture this scene. You are in a meeting. A colleague shares an idea you disagree with. In your own language, you know exactly how to push back without hurting anyone. You soften, you hedge, you hint. Everyone leaves happy.

Then you try to do the same in English. You say, “You are wrong. We must not do this.”
