Many professionals find small talk difficult, but it is just a three-step system.

In this article, you will learn a simple framework to start, maintain, and end conversations naturally using practical English structures.

The “ARE” Framework

Small talk often feels difficult because we do not know how to begin.

The “ARE” framework is a reliable tool to help you start a conversation in any professional setting.

ARE stands for Anchor, Reveal, and Encourage.

  • First, you Anchor. This means you talk about something both you and the other person are experiencing right now. You do not need a clever topic. You can talk about the room, the event, or even the food. For example: “The coffee here is actually very good.”
