How to Sound Sure (and When Not To)
Mobilise your Modal Verbs
If you want to sound confident in English without spending years on advanced grammar, modal verbs are the fastest route. They are small words like can, could, may, might, should, will and would.
They do not change the basic facts of a sentence.
They change how sure you sound, how polite you sound, and how strong your position is.
Think of them as the volume control on your voice. Learn to turn the volume up and down on purpose, and you control the impression you make.
This is a B1 topic that gives you a C1 effect, because the words themselves are simple. The skill is in the choosing, not in the difficulty of the grammar.
The confidence scale
The same idea can sound very strong or very soft depending on which modal you choose. Read these four sentences out loud and feel how the confidence rises with each one.
The rule of thumb: when you want to lead, move up the scale. When you want to open a discussion or be careful, move down it.
