Looking Back and Moving Forward
Highlights from Our December Conversation Class
It was a delight to host our final group conversation class of 2025 today!
We had a wonderful session focused on reflecting on the past year and setting intentions for 2026.
Whether you are already a paid MEMBER and regular attendee, or a free FOLLOWER thinking about joining us, here is a look at what we discussed.
Reflecting on 2025: Memories and Lessons
We practised using various past tenses to share our favourite moments.
One student shared a touching story about a family trek in the Alps, describing how the experience “strengthened the bond” between family members through teamwork and mutual motivation.
We also explored the concept of regret using past modals like “I should have.”
We discussed how easy it is to stay “stuck in a routine” and the importance of stepping out of your “comfort zone” to socialise more.
Setting Goals for 2026
The conversation then turned to the future. We looked at different ways to express our plans:
Intentions: Using “going to” for things we plan to do, such as joining a book club or taking an intensive language course.
Promises: Using “will” for firm commitments, like sitting a specific certification exam.
Possibilities: Using “might” or “could” to soften our goals and talk about things we are considering, such as volunteering or travelling to new places like Lapland.

3 Key Takeaways
Use the Present Perfect for Experiences: When talking about the impact of a past event on your current life (e.g., “We have made a stronger bond”), this tense is your best friend.
Mitigate the Risk: This is a great phrasal goal—it means to reduce the chances of something going wrong by being well-prepared.
Stay Pliable: To keep your language skills “pliable,” try to interchange between languages regularly rather than focusing on only one.
