Do you feel like your English is not improving?
â You can have a basic conversation, but you still struggle to find the right words in a meeting or a social situation.
â You study hard, but you do not feel more âfluentâ than you did last month.
The problem is not your memory!
The problem is that you are focusing on goals instead of systems.
The Solution: Systems over Goals
Most learners focus on a goal, like âpassing a B2 examâ or âbecoming fluent.â The problem is that a goal is only a result. A system is the daily habit that gets you there.
The Problem with Goals: You only feel successful on the day you pass the exam. If the exam is months away, you feel like you are failing every day until then.
The Power of Systems: A system is something you do every day (like a 10-minute routine). You feel successful every single time you complete your routine.
The Result: You do not reach fluency by wishing for it. You reach it because your daily system makes it impossible to fail.
The 1% Rule: Small Steps, Big Results
You do not need to study for hours. You only need to get 1% better every day.
If you improve your English by 1% every day, you will be much stronger by the end of the year.
In the beginning, you might not see the progress. This is normal. Your brain is collecting information, even if you donât feel âsmarterâ yet.
Do not stop when it feels difficult. This is the moment your brain is doing the most work.
Your Daily System: The 3M Method
To make your system work, it must be easy. Spend just 10 minutes a day on these three steps:
Micro (Small): Do not try to learn âall of English.â Choose one tiny topic. For example, learn three ways to say âI agreeâ or how to use the word âactuallyâ correctly.
Mimic (Copy): Find a short video or audio of a British speaker. Listen to 20 seconds and copy exactly how they speak. Donât just say the wordsâcopy their speed and their tone.
Mobilise (Use): This is the most important step. Use your new âMicroâ topic within 24 hours. Write it in a text message, say it out loud, or write a comment on a YouTube video. If you donât use it, you will forget it.
Change Your Mindset: You Are a Speaker
The best way to stay motivated is to change how you think about yourself.
Stop saying: âI am a student trying to learn English.â
Start saying: âI am an English speaker.â
Every time you listen to a podcast or use a new phrase, you are proving to yourself that you are a speaker. You are not waiting for a certificate to be fluent; you are using the language right now.
Your 10-Minute Plan for Today
Do these three things right now to start your new system:
Set a time: Decide exactly when you will do your 10 minutes of English tomorrow (for example, at 8:00 am while you have your morning coffee).
Pick one topic: Choose one small thing to learn today. (Example: âHow to use wish for the futureâ or â3 phrasal verbs for travelâ).
The 24-Hour Challenge: Use that new topic in a real sentence before this time tomorrow. You can send me a message here to practise!
