In life, we sometimes need to make a big change. We can call this a “pivot.” It is not about starting over. It is about a better plan for change.

The Basketball Move

The word “pivot” is from basketball. When a player holds the ball, they must keep one foot on the floor. This is the “planted foot.” They can move the other foot around. This is the “moving foot.”

This simple rule has two parts for making a change in your life:

  • The “planted foot” is your strong base. It is the best thing you can do or the most important thing you believe. It must stay.

  • The “moving foot” is the part that is free to find a new path or a new chance.

It is not starting over. It is controlled change: you explore new ideas but keep your base strong.

The Rule: Do Not Start Over

The most important lesson is: a real pivot is not throwing everything away. You change your direction, but you do not change who you are.

The “planted foot” is the core of your life or plan that stays the same.

  • A student wanted to become a doctor. The long study plan was too much for them. They felt like they failed. But they kept their planted foot: their strong skill in science and their love for helping people. Their moving foot changed to a new path: nursing. The final job changed, but their main skill and passion stayed.

The “planted foot” is why you are strong. Changing your plan is easy. Building a strong personal base again is very hard. A successful pivot saves your skill and passion while you look for new ways to use them.

Find Your “Planted Foot”

Your “planted foot” can be different. It can be a people skill, like speaking well, or a technical thing, like knowing how to use a special computer program.
