Welcome to the Friday Fix!

👉 Each Friday, we break down a real-world professional problem and replace “textbook” phrases with the authentic, native-level language that actually gets results.

The Situation

You were supposed to send a project update to your manager, Chris, by 5:00 PM yesterday. It’s now Friday morning, and the email is still in your drafts. You got overwhelmed with other tasks and simply lost track of time. Chris hasn’t messaged you yet, but you know he is expecting it. You need to apologise and provide the update without sounding like you’re making excuses.

Your Task

Write a brief email to Chris (3–4 sentences) acknowledging the mistake, offering a clear timeline for when the work will be done, and assuring him it won’t happen again.

Try it yourself before scrolling down! Use these sentence starters to help:

  • “I’m writing to apologise for...”

  • “I realise this has caused...”

  • “I will have this to you by...”

  • “To ensure this doesn’t happen again, I have...”

Key Phrases

  • “I wanted to take ownership of...” (Stronger than just saying “sorry”).

  • “This slipped through the cracks.” (A common idiom for missing a small detail/task).

  • “I will have this over to you by [Specific Time].” (Crucial for rebuilding trust).

  • “Moving forward, I will...” (Shows you have a plan to improve).
