The Fluency Gap
You know the grammar, can read articles and watch films without trouble.
But… when the pressure is on, in a high-stakes meeting, an interview, or a social event, the fluent English in your head won’t come out of your mouth.
Your mind goes blank. You sound like a student when you want to sound like a professional.
That’s the Fluency Gap. And it’s where most intermediate learners stay stuck.
Occasional lessons and textbooks won’t close it. Neither will another grammar app.
What closes it is focus, and the one thing that’s genuinely hard to find for any of us learning a language is focus and motivation. When you’re picking up English from everywhere at once, it stays a pile of separate pieces that never quite click into one confident whole.
So we give all that effort a clear goal!
From random study to focused sprints
Each month, we take one real situation, the kind that makes you tense up or hold back, and we spend four weeks getting genuinely good at it.
For example:
Handling a tough meeting.
Speaking with conviction instead of hedging.
Making small talk that doesn’t feel painful.
Sorting things out when travel plans go wrong.
Keeping a friendly conversation flowing.
Work, travel, and social life, one clear challenge, properly, together, every month.
By the end of the month you won’t just have done some lessons. You’ll be able to do something you couldn’t do four weeks earlier. Then a new challenge begins. You’re always moving forward.
Who this is for:
Intermediate to advanced learners who already read and understand English comfortably but want to speak with genuine confidence in professional and real-world settings.
If that’s you, keep reading.
What a month looks like:
Here’s exactly how a month works, so there’s no guesswork.
A monthly challenge with a clear path.
Week 1: you learn the core moves.
Week 2: you build on them.
Week 3: you tackle the hard, real-world version.
Week 4: you pull it all together and prove to yourself you can do it.
Something to do each week. This isn’t a spectator sport. Each week we give you one small, doable thing to try, in a meeting, on your travels, or in an everyday conversation. You get confident by using English, not by reading about it.
Your wins, celebrated. When you try the week’s challenge, send it to us. Each week we feature some of your wins with the whole Lab. There’s something powerful about being seen, and about seeing people just like you putting it into practice.
A live class each month. One Saturday morning a month, a small group of us get on a video call for an hour and actually speak English together, putting the month’s theme into practice with real people. No lectures, no grammar drills. Just real conversation with us in the room giving you feedback. This is the practice that’s genuinely hard to find as a busy adult learner, and it’s included with your membership. Already planned and in place for the year.

The people behind the Lab
There are two of us here, with more than forty years of teaching and coaching between us. Here’s who we are.
Hi, I’m Rachel
I’m a UK-qualified language expert with a Master’s in English Language Teaching, but my perspective is a little different from most teachers. I spent years in international trade before I ever taught a lesson, so I know which 20% of the language produces 80% of your professional results.
I don’t teach textbook English. I teach real-world impact, taking hesitant speakers and turning them into confident, professional communicators.
And I know your side of the table, not just mine. I've spent twenty years in Italy, running my whole working life in a language I had to learn as an adult. So when the English in your head won't come out the moment it matters, that isn't theory to me. I've lived it.
And I’m Paul
I’ve spent more than twenty years coaching professionals who use English as a second language. Engineers, lawyers, managers, sales teams. People who are brilliant at their jobs, but feel like a different person the moment they have to do that job in English.
Here’s what all those years taught me. The best communicators in English are not the ones with perfect grammar or a flawless accent. They’re the ones who stopped trying to be perfect and started focusing on being understood. More often than not that’s a confidence problem rather than a language one, and confidence is something you can build.
So that’s what I bring to the Lab. Not textbook exercises, but practical frameworks you can use in your next meeting, your next email, your next difficult conversation. Structure for when the pressure is on, so your good ideas actually get heard.
You’ll hear us both across the week
We set the pace on Monday, and the two of us get together for a chat on Wednesday for the BizPod and again on Friday for the Fix, where we take a real professional problem apart and hand you the language that actually solves it.
If you want to feel as confident in English as you do in your own language, you’re in the right place!
